Servicing gay men on the Drive

With just over a week under its belt, the newly expanded HIM On the Drive Health Centre is already on its way to serving more East Vancouver gays.

Health Initiative for Men On the DriveOfficially opened on February 18, the new location on Commercial Drive has allowed for the expansion of testing services and the addition of in-demand counseling resources such as professional counseling, peer support, and personal strategic advisement.

“The clear feedback from our community consultation is that East Vancouver is a bourgeoning space for gay men with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds that’s different from downtown,” says Wayne Robert, Executive Director of the Health Initiative for Men.  “Seventy percent of the HIM on the Drive clients have never visited our Davie Street location.  This means that we’re able to provide comprehensive services to gay men and other men who have sex with men by being closer to where they work and live.”

HIM on the Drive originally opened in August, 2011 and has been providing standard and rapid HIV, and STI testing services. Offering an alternate location outside the downtown core, the new Centre’s two dedicated counseling rooms will provide greater access and shorter wait times.

The Health Initiative for Men also operates a second clinic in Vancouver’s Davie Village at 421 – 1033 Davie Street.
