Denman Cinemas will get a suitably camp send-off with a screening of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert and a drag contest as part of the upcoming Vancouver Retro Cinema Fest.
One of Vancouver’s few remaining independent single screen cinemas, the screens of Denman Cinemas will finally go dark after fifty years following what is ironically the first-ever retro cinema festival in Vancouver.
An eight-day film festival which runs September 23 – 30, the Vancouver Retro Cinema Fest will feature 15 classics including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Back to the Future , The Labyrinth, Ghostbusters and the Australian drag queen road-movie The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
The Priscilla screening, which will take place on Friday, September 28 will not only include a showing of the iconic queer film, but will also include a drag contest.
The festival will kick off on Sunday, September 23 with The Godfather Parts I & II. Tickets for the festival range from $20 – $25 each night and include two or three films per evening. Special nights include Priscilla and a special screening of The Big Lebowski on September 29 as part of The Lebowski Bash.
“One of my favourite past times is getting together with old friends to celebrate classic films,” says organizer and former theatre usher Ron Tucker. “The aim of Vancouver Retro Cinema Fest is to get film lovers from all over the province to come together and celebrate these classic films in true retro style.”
