Of Phantoms and Distant Worlds

The Orpheum celebrates past and present identities in April as the Vancouver Bach Choir presents a brand new work to accompany the 1925 silent film Phantom of the Opera and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra plays the music from the Final Fantasy video game franchise.

Vancouver Bach Choir presents Phantom of the OperaFirst up on April 20, 2013 the Vancouver Bach Choir presents a specially commissioned work from Canadian composer Andrew Downing that will be performed live as the classic Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney is screened in the former movie house.

Described as a “complex, powerful score” by Vancouver Bach Choir musical director Les Dala, it includes lyrics taken directly from the film’s text performed by the Choir and a chamber ensemble that has been curated especially for this concert. The music will also feature an unusual combination of instruments including clarinet, piano, and double bass played by the composer himself.

Adapted from Gaston Leroux’s novel and long before he sang on Broadway, the film tells the story of a deformed dweller of the Paris Opera House who wreaks havoc in an attempt to force the beautiful woman he loves into the lead of Opera House’s next production.  Lauded when it was originally released, the film is still admired today as one of the best horror movies of all time.

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Distant Worlds: Music From Final FantasyOn April 24, 2013 the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents the return of Distant Worlds: Music From Final Fantasy featuring the award-winning music from the Final Fantasy video game franchise.

After selling out shows in 2009, this year’s Distant Worlds not only features past favourites from that original concert but will also feature new music selections never before seen and heard in Vancouver.

Scenes from the Final Fantasy games will be shown in high-definition video on the big screen while the orchestra and the UBC Opera Ensemble play under the leadership of Grammy Award winner Arnie Roth.  The evening will include a performance of Dancing Mad, the epic score featuring the Orpheum’s Wurlitzer Pipe Organ.
