The Food Gays Go Meatless for Movember

Can you believe the year is almost over? It’s that time of year when things start ramping up for the holidays, the sun starts setting at 4pm, and men put down their razors for a month. That’s right, we’re talking about Movember!

The Food Gays Go Meatless for MovemberIf you’re unfamiliar with the term, Movember is a month-long homage to the art of the moustache while raising funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and mental health initiatives.

Last year Movember efforts raised $125.7 million, with over 854,000 “Mo Bros” and “Mo Sistas” around the world participating. And now the Food Gays want to be a part of it too!

This is our first time participating, and we decided to take a unique approach on the Movember movement by incorporating food.

We read recently that red meat has actually been linked to prostate cancer, which accounts for 27% of new cancer cases for men, so we figured that cutting out meat and incorporating the leafy greens and alternative proteins will be a good thing for our over-all health. And that is how what we’re calling Meatless Movember was born!

For the month we will be preparing a different vegetarian recipe each weekday; recipes that our Twitter followers suggested using the hashtag #MeatlessMovember.  And we’ve got to say we’ve lined up a pretty stellar meal plan so far.

We’re going to use our new pressure cooker, our Crock-Pot, and your basic home cooking equipment to create some of the tastiest meat-free dishes you’ve seen! From pancakes to breads, to soups and casseroles, we are diving into the veggie world to broaden our mind with new flavors and ingredients – all the while growing a killer ‘stache.

During Meatless Movember, we are looking forward to a couple of events that will really test our veggie abilities in Vancouver, not just in our home.  The first is the Vancouver Foodster Best Burger Challenge, which runs from November 5 – 30 in restaurants all around Vancouver (vote on Twitter using the hashtag #BestBurgerChallenge). We’re definitely excited to try some of the veggie burger options available and report back!

The second event is Tasting Plates Vancouver Fall Edition, this time located in our hood in and around East Van, Chinatown and Strathcona. This edition of Tasting Plates will hopefully have more vegetarian options available, as the Kits edition had little for those who didn’t eat meat.  There are still some tickets available if you’re curious, and maybe you’ll run into us!

The month of Movember is going to be a fun and exciting new food adventure for us, and we invite you to come visit our blog during Movember to see the different flavors coming out of our kitchen!
