From the sublime to the offbeat our picks this week in (gay) Vancouver are shaping up to be as diverse as the city in which we live.
The frank theatre company, Vancouver’s queer theatre company, hosts The Voice of the Century (Jun 20), a cabaret evening of writing and music featuring drag queen Delica C. as Maria Callas. The choice of Callas is hardly coincidental as this fundraiser will help raise funds to cover the costs of producing the lesbian-themed opera, When the Sun Comes Out, during the upcoming World Pride in Toronto.
Are you into Cosplay or consider yourself a Furry? No, we’re not talking about the bears at the Pumpjack, we’re talking the anthropomorphic where human and animal characteristics are both present. The Vancouver International Film Festival presents the return of Best of Hot Docs (Jun 20-26), a selection of documentary screenings that includes the Vancouver premiere of nine films from this year’s Hot Docs lineup. Insightful, funny, beautiful, revealing, intimate, celebratory and heartwarming are all used to variously describe the films, but the one thing they have in common is in their ability to inform.
