This week in (gay) Vancouver: some drag, singing mermaids, a theatre fest and a party

Drag, singing mermaids, some theatre and a party for the ladies are all part of our picks for the coming week in (gay) Vancouver.

East Vancouver continues to flex its queer spirit with the 3rd annual Mr/Miss Cobalt Drag Competition (May 11) at The Cobalt.  Contestants are vying for bookings plus a $500 cash prize.  This week’s preliminary round is followed by the semi-finals on May 18 and the finale on May 28.  Hosted by Peach Cobblah and Junita Werk.

We’ve heard of the Sound Of Music Sing-a-long and done the whole Rocky Horror Show thing, but looks like Ariel and friends are getting a similar treatment in the Little Mermaid Sing-a-long (May 13) at The Junction.  A queer geek fundraiser for BC Superfriends, dressing up … oops, we mean cosplay … is encouraged.

The 2014 rEvolver Theatre Festival (May 14-25) seems to have it all: clowns, music, theatre, and even an all-female pirate swordfighting spectacular.  This second annual festival offers professional presenting opportunities to emerging theatre makers in Vancouver.  (Photo above: Andrew Barrett in Shattered; photo by Pamela Bethel)

Where the girl’s are …  Flygirl’s popular women’s party Hershe Bar (May 18) is back.  This edition features DJs Riki Rocket and Kasey Riot.
