This week in (gay) Vancouver: sitcoms, culture and Hogwarts

This week you have an opportunity to watch a lesbian sitcom play out live on stage, examine how culture changes or is changed in dance, and get an early start on your Halloween festivities.

Slacks: A Live Lesbian Sitcom

Big fans of the television sitcom Undateable that is broadcasting live each week this season, it is perhaps a bit ironic that Vancouver’s Little Basket Theatre is bringing Slacks (Oct 14-17) to the Havana Theatre stage in what they are calling a live lesbian sitcom. With three “episodes” showing each night, Slacks follows friends Jackie and Taylor who decide to live together, despite their differences.

Unwrapping Culture

Vancouver gay choreographer Alvin Erasga Tolentino teams up with Thai dance artist Pichet Klunchun in Unwrapping Culture (Oct 15-17), a new contemporary dance work exposing how traditional Thai culture is changing by the forces of commercialization and modern consumer culture. A funny, satirical, and hard-hitting piece, beneath it all is a serious and thoughtful examination of how culture changes or is changed, and who defines it.

The Hogwarts Halloween Ball

Get a headstart on Halloween with #TOMBOY: The Hogwarts Halloween Ball (Oct 17). Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw & Slytherin guests are encouraged to come in their house colours and costumes with a “magical” evening of music, burlesque & tournaments. DJs Kasey Riot and She provide the music.
