The Vancouver Pride Society has named a beauty queen and a drag queen as this year’s Pride parade grand marshalls.
Transgendered Miss Universe Canada contestant Jenna Talackova (pictured right) joins long-time drag performer Bill Monroe as grand marshalls of the 2012 Vancouver Pride parade on Sunday, August 5, 2012. Community activist David Holtzman was honoured posthumously.
Talackova made international headlines earlier this year as she fought and won a legal battle allowing her to become the first transgendered contestant in the Miss Universe Canada competition. While Talackova didn’t take home the crown, she was named Miss Congeniality. On the Pride Society website organizers say “Jenna, a local Vancouverite, refused to be discriminated against and fought alongside top feminist lawyer, Gloria Allred, to be treated fairly and equally.”
Drag performer and local activist Bill Monroe has been a staple of Vancouver’s community since 1981. Best known for his impersonation of Queen Elizabeth II, Monroe continues to help raise funds for various charitable organizations in Vancouver.
Community leader David Holtzman is remembered posthumously for his work with A Loving Spoonful and the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. Holtzman died suddenly earlier this year.
The 2012 edition of the Vancouver Pride Parade gets underway at Noon on Sunday, August 5, 2012. Visit http://www.vancouvepride.ca for more information.
