In our ongoing special series, spend 69 seconds with Ian Yuri Gardner who plays Mercedes in the upcoming Vancouver Playhouse production of La Cage aux Folles.

01Your first job.
A worker at a feed & tack shop selling food and supplies for farm animals and pets.

02The job you wanted as a child.
I wanted to be a pastor of a church.

03Your hero.
Bayard Rustin … advisor and mentor to Martin Luther King Jr. He was black and he was gay and sadly the civil rights movement choose to distance themselves from him. The general black communities in the USA and Canada are very ignorant of his contribution to civil rights.

04If you could have dinner with one person, who would that be?
The pope … I would wear my platform heels and a condom dress … what scandalous photos … and religion would never be the same.

05Finish this sentence: I first kissed a boy…
… at a bathhouse in Victoria … seriously I did.

06Your biggest indulgence.
That’s too personal to answer truthfully. Vanilla ice cream is the next biggest.

07RuPaul or Divine?
Divine … even though I am black, I was a fat queen once.

08Three things you would want with you on a deserted island.
A box of Platinum Wet Lube, Breyer’s All Natural Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, my future husband.

09 Your pet peeve.
Gay men who want open relationships.

10 The one thing any visitor to Vancouver simply cannot miss.
La Cage aux Folles at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre … and an open invitation to my dressing room if you are cute.
