Friends of Dorothy film series set to launch at Rio

One of Vancouver’s few remaining independent theatres and an East Vancouver landmark, the Rio Theatre at Broadway and Commercial is set to launch The Friends of Dorothy Film Series.

The Friends of Dorothy Film SeriesThe film series begins on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 7:30pm with a double-feature screening of the Wizard of Oz and The Adventure of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The series will be hosted by Isolde N. Barron, drag queen alter-ego of East Van resident Cameron MacKenzie and in addition to hosting duties, MacKenzie will also perform during each movie.

“The place to be to watch great movies, great entertainment and be with great friends is the Rio Theatre on film night,” said MacKenzie.  “This is what we’ve been waiting for!”

The monthly series will continue in what MacKenzie says will be “an exploration of queer cinema from a cross-generational perspective paying attention to the roots of queer film, including disguised queer heroes of celluloid history.”
