The Ignite! Youth Festival, Vancouver’s largest youth-driven arts festival is looking for acts for Fruit Basket, the festival’s variety show about gender, sex and sexuality.
Hosted by The Cultch, the IGNITE! Youth Festival is an annual week-long festival organized by youth for youth. From May 6 – 11, 2013 each night will see a different show that includes music, cross-disciplinary performances along with dance, spoken word and more.
On May 10, 2013 the Fruit Basket variety show explores sex, sexuality, sexual orientation, and gender identity in a unique showcase of Vancouver’s diversely talented youth. Organizers are currently seeking acts from across all spectrums of sexuality and gender expression or identity to perform.
To audition, you must be between the ages of 13 and 24. If interested, potential acts are invited to email firstname.lastname@example.org before March 1, 2013 to book an audition.
In addition, Fruit Basket organizers will also host a Gender Blender workshop on April 20, 2013.
“Being young is about finding yourself, and sometimes things can get a little confusing along the way,” says Brendan Agnew in a release from the Fruit Basket Committee. “Join us for an afternoon and discuss the beautiful colours and facets of the rainbow that is gender, sex, identity and orientation”.
Facilitated by Nico McKay from Out in Schools, the afternoon workshop is designed to be a safe, supportive environment for queer youth to hang-out and to share their stories and experiences.
“And we call it Gender Blender for a reason,” says Agnew. “It’s a BYOF event (Bring Your Own Fruit). Feel free to grab the nearest watermelon, apple or papaya and come on down to make your own smoothie while enjoying a good talk. We will provide the blenders, berries and milk products, as well as vegan options.”
