Queer arts festival explores the games people play

Vancouver’s annual Queer Arts Festival celebrates the North American Outgames with its Games People Play theme in 2011.

Queer Arts Festival 2011In explaining the choice of its theme, organizers looked to the games we play within our own community, encouraging artists to queer the idea of games and play: “queer cultures often emphasize elements of game-play, from camp to butch/femme to strictures of ‘straight looking/straight acting’, we play around with identity and its shadows of artifice, passing and trespassing.”

Set to get underway at the Roundhouse Community Centre on July 26, the Festival is a three week long multidisciplinary arts celebration of queer art and artists that includes a curated visual arts exhibition, the return of a community based art show and a wide range of performance art including theatre, dance, music, spoken word, art workshops and more.

Games People Play: Visual Arts Exhibition

Curated by Persimmon Blackbridge, SD Holman and Jeff Gibson, this free art exhibition runs from July 26 through August 13 in the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall.
