Studies in Motion: The Hauntings of Eadweard Muybridge which opens April 2nd at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre (until April 18), will be part of Montreal’s Festival TransAmériques, May 20-June 6 (specifically May 28, 29, 30). Written by Kevin Kerr, Studies in Motion is directed by Kim Collier and choreographed by Crystal Pite and features a cast of Vancouver’s finest performers.

Studies in Motion was originally co-produced by Electric Company Theatre and Theatre at UBC and premiered at the 2006 PuSh International Performing Arts Festival. The run at the Playhouse is part of a national tour to Whitehorse, Calgary and Montreal. The unique thing about Studies in Motion on tour is its size: a touring company of 22, which is almost never done in Canadian theatre. It also marks the elevation of Vancouver’s independent theatre creation scene to one of the most prestigious international stages in Canada.

“Performing and representing BC at this festival has been a longstanding dream of ours. FTA is one of the country’s most important contemporary performance platforms,” says Nathan Medd, ECT Managing Producer. “2009 is a landmark year for Electric Company: we will debut on major stages in Montreal, Toronto and Calgary with two separate tours: Studies in Motion and No Exit. We are also excited to be headed to Festival TransAmériques with our pals at Theatre Replacement (Bioboxes).”

“The Playhouse is especially proud of supporting the Electric Company and their production of Studies in Motion,” says Max Reimer, Artistic Managing Director of the Playhouse. “I’m excited about our continuing work with other large and small professional companies. The Playhouse has excelled in working with others to develop interesting work for our audiences and to sustain the vibrancy of our artistic community.”

Studies in Motion: The Hauntings of Eadweard Muybridge is on stage until April 18 at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre (Hamilton & Dunsmuir in downtown Vancouver). Tickets are available by calling 604.873.3311, on line at or in person at the Playhouse Theatre Box Office, 127 East 2nd Avenue.
