As a community-based organization dedicated to strengthening the health and well-being of gay men, Health for Men (HIM) approach includes physical, sexual, social and mental health.
In addition to engaging with gay men through its research-based, community-focused, volunteer-driven activities, the Health for Men (HIM) also operates the HIM Sexual Health Centre, where gay men can access STI & HIV testing, peer support, and professional counseling services.
But they are also a very practical lot, offering a variety of special and ongoing events such as its summer fitness offerings (through August 2011) that come in two distinct flavours including Love Handles For Lycra, a lower level group that meets Mondays and Wednesdays at Nelson Park from 7pm-8pm and Pecs For Pride, a boot camp style workout at the same location and time on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Ongoing events include the Men on Men relationship discussion group every Tuesday at the Roundhouse Community Centre from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Open to ‘all men who love men’, the group is a facilitated discussion of the multiple aspects of men’s relationships: finding them, maintaining them, getting out of them, how our relationships are the same and different and much more. Drop-ins are welcome.
Connect With HIM – A Group For Gay Guys is a space for gay guys to meet other gay guys, discuss gay life and build community. This drop-in group takes place every Wednesday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the HIM offices located at #310 – 1033 Davie Street (buzzer 310).
On Thursdays HIM hosts Gay Warriors @ HIM, a two-spirit/gay men’s talking circle based on aboriginal practices and ceremonies. This ongoing drop-in group discusses various topics including healthy relationships, sexuality, grief and spiritual practices. 7:30pm to 9:30pm at #310 – 1033 Davie Street (buzzer 310).
What west coast gay man’s organization wouldn’t be complete with some yoga. On Fridays, HIM hosts Yoga With HIM, a by donation ($5 – $10 suggested) drop-in yoga session to help increase flexibility, circulation and overall health and well-being. Led by some very talented volunteer yoga instructors, the sessions get underway at 7pm (sharp!) at the Scotiabank Dance Centre, 677 Davie Street. Please bring your own yoga mat and towel.
Every second Monday at HIM is party time. Condom Packaging Parties that is. Join the guys at HIM every second Monday from 6pm to 9pm as their team of volunteers package condoms and lube for distribution to other gay guys. This social group is known for its lively conversation and free meals from its donors. The fun takes place at the HIM offices located #310 – 1033 Davie Street (buzzer 310).
The HIM Sexual Health Centre, located at #421 – 1033 Davie Street, offers a variety of services including rapid HIV testing (results within a minute), early HIV testing (test two weeks after risk exposure) and standard HIV testing.
