With almost 190 members, the Vancouver Tennis Association is one of the largest gay and lesbian sporting organizations in Vancouver. Registration for the group’s 2010 season, which begins May 2nd, is now underway.
Like a number of other gay sporting organizations in Vancouver, the Vancouver Tennis Association (VTA) was established after the Gay Games in 1990.
In 1993 the club affiliated itself with the international Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA) with many Vancouver Tennis Association members regularly competing in GLTA’s many tournaments held around the world, as well as in the Gay Games.
In 1996, the VTA established the annual North West Cup (NWC) team competition with the Seattle Tennis Alliance and Portland Tennis Club. Featuring some of the best tennis players from each club, the NWC is rotated each year amongst the three cities. The 2010 NWC will take place in Portland June 5th and 6th.
The first Vancouver International Pride (VIP) was held in 2000 which is an annual GLTA-sanctioned tournament attracting players from all over the world. This tournament traditionally takes place during Vancouver’s Pride celebrations in August.
A non-profit group fostering and promoting goodwill, fellowship, and healthy competition among tennis players in the gay and lesbian community, the Vancouver Tennis Association is definitely the place for tennis enthusiasts of all skill levels.
The VTA Mission: Our mission is to promote and support tennis as a positive activity for all regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
