Arts Club to present stage version of American movie classic

Based on the 1954 movie classic of the same name starring Bing Crosby, the Arts Club Theatre Company will perform the musical stage adaptation of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas: The Musical beginning November 12th.

According to the show’s director Bill Millerd, he could think of no better musical than this which features one of the most recorded songs in history.  “The stage adaptation of the film musical has added more of Berlin’s favourites and the production has moved beyond White Christmasthe confines of a film, exploding on stage with a versatile cast that sings beautifully and tap-dances furiously. This is a company that will fill the stage and transport you back to the 1950s, when dreaming of a white Christmas was the easiest thing to do.”, continued Millerd.

Berlin originally wrote the song “White Christmas” for the 1942 movie Holiday Inn which went on to win an Academy Award that year for Best Song. Bing Crosby sang it in that movie, as well as the film version of White Christmas in 1954. Crosby’s recording has sold over 30 million copies and is still one of the best-selling singles in the world.

The musical version of the film was first produced in San Francisco in 2004. After a holiday season run on Broadway last year, it received two 2009 Tony Award nominations and six 2009 Drama Desk Award nominations.
