Vancouver’s women’s theatre company Leaping Thespians brings a lesbian twist to a holiday classic with A Christmas Carol in Gay Apparel.
Based on the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, this original new script includes the classic storyline of Christmas humbug with the added burden of this story’s “Scrooge” being in denial that she is lesbian.
In this lesbian-reworking of the time-honoured classic, Scrooge becomes the female equivalent “Crooge” and is visited by Marley, an old college girlfriend. Urging Crooge to come out of the closet, she is eventually visited by the Ghosts of Lesbians Past, Present and Future who also urge her to be herself.
Few aspects of Dickens’ story are left untouched as Crooge trades in the traditional bookkeeping job for a yoga clothing company and Tiny Tim becomes Tina Timmins looking for a donation for the high school’s Gay Straight Alliance.
“This is parody mixed with sketch comedy in Leaping Thespians’ audience pleasing style,” said Stephanie Kemp in a release. “And we have five songs and a few things to say about bullying!”
